Lan Ha Bay - an isolated and untouched bay

Lan Ha Bay, located to the south of Halong Bay, would have been much more popular if it wasn't so close to the "tourist giant" neighbor. This arc-shaped bay contains several hundred large and small islands, resulting in a majestic and fairy-tale landscape.

The administrative boundary defines that Lan Ha Bay belongs to Hai Phong province, whereas Halong Bay belongs to Quang Ninh province, but because the landscape is similar, with islands and islets scattered all over the water surface, locals and tourists both recognize it as part of the vast Halong Bay zone.

Many small fishing villages show a relaxed pace of life while raising regional specialties such as mussels and oysters in the peaceful gulf that separates them from the rest of the world. They will be transformed into fresh, savory, nutritious meals or pearl souvenirs for the guests at some point. Some islands, such as Sen Island, Cu Island, and Khi Island (Monkey Island), have calm and clear waters that are ideal for diving and coral-sightseeing; you won't be able to do this in the core of Halong Bay because the water quality is better there.

Geologically, Lan Ha is an extension of Halong Bay but sits in a different province. Unlike its famous neighbor, Lan Ha Bay retains more pristine scenery with a dense concentration of limestone mountains that the sea surface has partitioned into smaller bays and gulfs. There are over a hundred beautiful, small beaches at the foot of the mountains, so finding a good spot for swimming, organizing a private beach BBQ, or an overnight camp is easy. Imagine being able to completely relax after a long day of exploring caves and grottos by bathing in the azure waters and breathing in the salty sea breeze of Lan Ha Bay.

Cat Ba Island is located in Lan Ha Bay. The bay and Cat Ba National Park are both part of the world's biosphere reserve. As a result, European and American backpackers frequently hire their own boats for a self-guided adventure, choosing one of the bay's 139 beaches for a pleasant sandy beach to camp overnight. They also take a trip through the Cat Ba National Forest, which is home to many valuable animals, including the rare white-headed langur. Overcoming Ngu Lam peak, at the end of the journey, Viet Hai fishing village, Cat Ba Island's most unspoiled fishing village, is where visitors can discover many interesting characters of the island's local people.

How to book a tour of Lan Ha Bay

Like Halong Bay, Lan Ha is best explored on an overnight boat tour, which usually includes a stop at a beach and the chance to get out on the water to kayak. However, tours can also include activities like hiking and rock climbing, as well as homestays on some of the islands.

Tours can be arranged from nearby Cat Ba Island as well as Hanoi. Tours are typically offered as a one-day, two-day/one-night, or three-day/two-night package, with the admission fee to the bay included.
