Weather in Vietnam and the best time to visit Vietnam

Viet Nam is the easternmost country on the Indochinese Peninsula. It is situated in the tropical region, however, due to differences in latitude and the marked variety in topographical relief, Viet Nam’s climate tends to vary considerably for each region. The north has a tropical monsoon climate with four distinctive seasons, and temperatures in the south are less varied permitting only dry and rainy seasons.

There are two distinct monsoon seasons in Vietnam. The southwest monsoon brings rain and humidity, while the northeast monsoon brings drizzly, colder weather to the north and dry weather to the south.

Northern Vietnam has four seasons: during the winter months of December to February, temperatures can drop to 5-6°C, and in mountainous areas, even below zero. The summer months of June and July are hot, with highs of 35°C during the day. Autumn, August-November, and spring, March-April, bring drizzly rains and warmer temperatures.

Central Vietnam has warm temperatures all year, with the hottest months occurring in the middle of the year and cooler, drier days occurring from November to April.

Southern Vietnam has a warmer climate than Northern and Central Vietnam throughout the year. The average temperature is between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. From November to April, there is a dry season, and from May to October, there is a rainy season.

When is the best time to visit Vietnam?

There is never a bad time to visit Vietnam. The climate in the country is tropical monsoon, with the south or southwesterly monsoon dominating from May to September and the northeast monsoon dominating from October to April. So, determining the best time to visit Vietnam is dependent on which parts of the country you want to visit – unless you're willing to be caught in a daily downpour or don't mind extreme heat and humidity.

Northern Vietnam is best visited between October and April. This is the dry season, with less rain than in the summer and pleasant temperatures. However, avoid the months of December and January because it can be extremely cold and even snow in the mountainous areas. Central Vietnam is best visited between January and August, when temperatures average around 30°C. You should also visit Southern Vietnam during the dry season, which runs from November to April.
