9 Days Northern of Vietnam

This itinerary is an in-depth study of the history, people and landscapes of northern Vietnam. Leaving behind the graceful boulevards of Hanoi, we explore Sapa with remote hill tribe villages surrounded by rolling green hills and the amazing limestone scenery of Tam Coc. The grand finale of the trip is at Halong Bay. We stay overnight on a luxurious junk boat with island visits, delicious food, fishing, sunbathing and kayaking. 

Full itinerary

Day 1 Hanoi arrival

Upon arrival at Noi Bai International airport, met and picked up by our local guide. Transfer to hotel for check-in. Overnight in Hanoi.

Day 2 Hanoi city tour (B/L/D)

Spend full day to discover Hanoi – the captical of Vietnam. In the morning, visit Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (closed on Monday & Friday) and House-on-stilt, Hochiminh Museum, One Pillar pagoda. Go to see Van Mieu (Temple of Literature) which is the first university of Vietnam from 11 century. In the afternoon, take a cyclo tour through the bustling old quarter streets named after the specific goods once offered for sales at these places. Stop to visit Hoan Kiem Lake – Ngoc Son Temple. Enjoy Water Puppet show – the most famous Vietnamese cultural show with folk songs. Have dinner and overnight in Hanoi.

Day 3 Hanoi - Sapa (B/L/D)

Pick up by your tour guide and driver from hotel in Hanoi, transfer to Sapa. It will take you 5 hour driving to Lao Cai city. After lunch, continue to Sapa town. Check in hotel and start your short trekking in the afternoong to visit Cat Cat village.

We will meet the Black H’mong after a trek through the wooden gates of Cat Cat Village. We will speak to locals here about life with a constant, gorgeous backdrop before we move to the deep valley village of Sin Chai in the foothills of Vietnam’s highest point, Fansipan Peak. 

As we watch the locals go about their daily business, we continue trekking to a gushing waterfall at the base of the valley. We will rest here for a bit before heading back to the bus driving back to Sapa Town.

We will savour dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Sapa.

Day 4 Sapa – Y Linh Ho – Lao Chai/Ta Van village (B)

Start the day with breakfast in your hotel and then join the tour as we take a walk around the old villages of Sapa.

We pass the waterfall again as we snake up a mountain via a winding dirt road, with the higher vantage points gracing us with gorgeous views. After a trek along a narrow stream, Y Linh Ho Village comes into sight for us to rest and chat to the Black H'mong minority who live here. 

As we descend into Muong Hoa Valley, Sapa’s most expansive rice fields will unfold in front of you. If you are lucky enough to be visiting between May and October, you will see the iconic green or golden rice of Sapa stretch out into the valley.

We continue from Lao Chai Village, home of the Black H’mong, to Ta Van village, owned by the Giay minority. You will have an unforgettable local lunch in a traditional Giay household before boarding the bus back to Sapa Town.

Return to Sapa town, visit the Notre Dame Cathedral or head to the top of neighbouring Ham Rong Mountain.

Spend the rest of the afternoon as you wish.

Day 5 Sapa – Fansipan mount peak (by cable car) – Hanoi (B)

In the past, Fansipan normally takes climbers two days to cross the challenging route to reach the top of Fansipan, but everyone can now touch what is also known as “Indochina’s Roof” within 15 minutes thanks to the Fansipan cable car system. Recently opened for tourists, the cable route has welcomed thousands of visitors coming to Sapa to make their dream of conquering the highest Indochina peak to be real.

Measuring 6,282 meters, the Fansipan cable car has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s longest three-rope cable car route and the world’s biggest ascent between the departure and arrival, measuring at 1,410 meters. You will be watching the Muong Hoa valley in cloud and magnificent Hoang Lien Son range from above. After a 15-minute cable car, you continue to climb 300 stairs to reach the top of Fansipan grandeur. Let’s capture memorable moments on top of Vietnam.

Return to Sapa town, have your lunch and back to Hanoi in the afternoon.

Day 6 Hanoi - Halong (B/L/D)

Picked up at Hanoi railway station. Have breakfast at a hotel. Then, proceed to Ha Long. Welcome on board for a junk cruise and set sail in the bay while lunch is served. Passage into the magical bay, where thousands of sculpted limestone islands rise from the waves like dragons' teeth. After lunch, take a short trek to a nearby summit for a panoramic view of the bay, swimming on a quiet beach or sunbathing on the sundeck. Late afternoon, visit an interesting fishing village with an opportunity to interact with anglers who have been living in the bay for almost three generations. At sunset, kayak is good option to discover a water tunnel with many coral reefs in a scenic lagoon. Back on board, enjoy watching the peaceful sunset and later unwind at restaurant on cruise.

Overnight on cruise.

Day 7 Halong - Hanoi (B/Br)

Rising to the sound of lapping bay waters, you have time for an early morning dip followed by breakfast. Sitting on the upper deck, you can relax while taking in the breath-taking beauty of the rocky islands rising from the emeraude water of the bay. After breakfast, you explore Sung Sot cave – one of the bigget caves of Halong Bay. Then, the boat cruises back to the jetty while brunch is served. Your boat arrives at the harbor by noon. Transfer back to Hanoi. Free time to discover Hanoi at night.

Overnight in Hanoi.

Day 8 Hanoi - Trang An - Hoa Lu - Hanoi (B/L)

In the morning, transfer to Ninh Binh Province which is 90km from Hanoi. Visit Hoa Lu – the Ancient Royal Capital under Dinh Dynasty and pre-Le Dynasty, which lasted 41 years (968-1009). Continue our drive to Trang An. Take boat trip to visit cave complex: Sang Cave, Toi Cave, Ba Giot Cave, Nau Ruou in mystery and wildness, see scenery of mountain and river. After the boat trip, return to Hanoi. Check in hotel.

Overnight in Hanoi.

Day 9 Hanoi departure (B)

Our driver and guide will escort you to the airport for your onward flight. Tour ends!
