The capital of Vietnam today is Hanoi, but in the 10th and 11th centuries, it was Hoa Lu. This small old temple was innately shielded from incursions by karsts and rivers. Today, it's a nice spot to get your history fix.
Admire the view from Hang Mua
Hang Mua, where 500 steps have been dramatically carved into the steep face of a mountain, provides a bird's-eye view of Ninh Binh. A lookout point at the top provides a surreal view of the river meandering lazily through paddies and limestone outcrops.
