Traditional Calligraphy Class

Introduction to a Historical Art Form

Class size: 1 - 25 guests

Duration: 2 hours

The Chinese settlers introduced calligraphy to Vietnam, and it was one of many cultural exchanges that shaped Vietnamese culture. However, much has changed since then in order to better express the richness of the Vietnamese language through art. Its use was historically restricted to scholars and noblemen when Han script was still widely used, but today, the art has roots in both modern Vietnamese calligraphy using Chinese characters and the Vietnamese alphabet, Chu Quoc-ngu.

Despite the numerous changes, the essence of the art has remained constant. The grace with which brush strokes define each character is as appealing as art itself.

The character that describes women, for example, can mean "peace" if a "roof" symbol is placed over it. The art, which appears abstract in nature, follows a rule that is both fascinating to learn and practice.

Our host, a skilled artist and calligraphy master, will transport you back in time and introduce you to an art form that is still revered and respected today.

Don't pass up this opportunity to learn this ancient art by putting your own strokes on paper.
